Carpentry

A student who has completed the Job Corps Carpentry program is equipped with the skills to contribute to your company as a valued employee from day one. Competence in academic and vocational skills is required for graduation. In addition, Job Corps students learn employability and technological skill. To complete his or her Carpentry training, a student must master skills in the following categories:

CARPENTRY HELPER, LEVEL I

    GENERAL SAFETY
    Recognize danger and take appropriate safety measures; wear proper safety clothing and personal protective equipment.

    MATH
    Perform carpentry-related math operations and measurements; calculate square-foot and linear measurements; square corners using the Pythagorean Theorem.

    TRADE TERMINOLOGY
    Identify the components of floor framing, wall framing, types of roofs, roof framing systems, insulation, roofing materials, siding, exterior finish systems and exterior trim components; identify different types and sizes of doors, windows, drywall, forms and form components.

    HAND AND POWER TOOLS
    Identify and use carpentry hand and power tools; identify proper maintenance and storage of tools.

    LADDERS AND SCAFFOLDING
    Select and safely use ladders and scaffolding.

    LUMBER IDENTIFICATION
    Identify sizes and types of framing lumber, lumber defects, sheathing and trim molding.

    FASTENERS
    Identify nail and screw types, masonry fasteners and other construction fasteners.

    SAW HORSE
    Build and use a saw horse.

CARPENTRY HELPER, LEVEL II
LEVEL I SKILLS PLUS SOME OR ALL THE FOLLOWING SPECIALTY AREAS:

    FINISH CARPENTRY

      DOORS AND WINDOWS
      Install a pre-hung door; set a metal door frame; install door hardware and window units.

      INTERIOR TRIM
      Install casings, moldings, base, etc.

      FORM WORK

      FOOTING FORM
      Build and strip footing form.

      WALL FORMS
      Erect and strip a wall form.

      COLUMN AND PIER FORM
      Build and strip column and pier form.

    FRAMING

      JOISTS AND SUBFLOORING
      Lay out, cut and install floor joints; frame a floor opening; install bridging, blocking and subfloor sheathing.

      WALLS AND PARTITIONS
      Frame walls and partitions with window and door openings; install backing for fixtures and cabinets; raise, align, plumb and brace walls and partitions; install wall sheathing.

      RAFTERS AND TRUSSES
      Identify components of the roof and truss system; cut and frame ceiling joists and rafters; install and brace pre-engineered roof trusses; install roof sheathing.

    METAL STUDS, DRYWALL AND CEILING

      METAL STUDS
      Lay out and install metal studs with rough openings.

      DRYWALL
      Lay out, cut and install drywall on walls and ceiling; install accessories (j-mold, corner mold, etc.).

      CEILING
      Lay out, level and install suspended ceiling.

    ROOFING

      REGIONALLY SPECIFIC ROOF COVERINGS
      Install roofing subtrate; install finish roofing materials.
