Bricklayer

A student who has completed the Job Corps Bricklayer program is equipped with the skills to contribute to your company as a valued employee from day one. Competence in academic and vocational skills is required for graduation. In addition, Job Corps students learn employability and technological skills. To complete his or her Bricklayer training, a student must master skills in these categories:

BRICKLAYER HELPER

    SAFETY
    Demonstrate general shop, tool and equipment safety; define and explain the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

    MASON TENDING
    Use hand tools; mix mortars; operate equipment; set up and break down scaffolding; inspect scaffolding for safety problems; stock job to keep it running smoothly.

    MASONRY MEASURING AND CUTTING
    Operate masonry saw; cut masonry with hammer and brick set; demonstrate toothing masonry; remove mortar joints; use and read a 6-foot rule or tape; read a modular and spacing rule.

    BRICK, BLOCK AND STONE
    Spread mortar; butter masonry units; lay units to a line; tool and rake out joints.

    FIREPLACES (WHERE APPROPRIATE)
    Lay out and install a firebox; set dampers and headforms; construct a brick corbel; place a flue liner.

BRICKLAYER, PRE-APPRENTICE
HELPER SKILLS PLUS THE FOLLOWING:

    INSTALLATION AND BUILDING
    Lay veneer, overhand and rowlock; install sills, headers and underpainting; build corners, leads, pilasters and piers.

    LAYOUT AND BOND
    Lay out brick, block and composite walls and American, English, Flemish and pattern bonds; lay out and install pavers using a paver rack in various patterns.

    REINFORCEMENT
    Install lateral wall ties, horizontal reinforcements, rebars, lintels and bond beams.

    POINTING, CLEANING AND CAULKING
    Use acids and detergents for cleaning; demonstrate sand blasting and mortar matching.

    GROUTING
    Describe use of grouting safety precautions.

BRICKLAYER, APPRENTICE
PRE-APPRENTICE SKILLS PLUS THE FOLLOWING:

    MEASURING AND LEVELING Use a story pole, levels and transits; demonstrate the 6-8-10 squaring method.

    POINTING, CLEANING AND CAULKING
    Demonstrate masonry replacement.

    GROUTING
    Mix reinforced grout, grouts for structural tile and brick pavers; grout reinforced masonry, structural tile and brick pavers.
